Fusion

Each week, we explore a concept and provide our thoughts, inspiration and context in the world of art and design.

This week’s word is Fusion.

The process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.

Musings

Imagine an orchestra. Each instrument is distinctive in sound- unique in rhythm, tune, and pitch. On their own, the sounds are beautiful.

But when they come together, a magical fusion occurs.

A symphony is born, the sum of all parts more prosperous, more evocative than any individual alone.

Through many points in our lives, fusion appears. Often we look at fusion as the merging of cultures; maybe in cuisine, art or creative expression; but it also lives within perspectives and ideas.

By opening ourselves to other’s perspectives and thoughts we allow ourselves to come to unique outcomes. Fusion extends to our own inner workings we bring to others, a meld of our individual past experiences.

Fusion becomes an ingenious point in design.

A well-known example is the Japandi style, a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design principles. It combines the Japanese concepts of 'wabi-sabi' (finding beauty in imperfection) and 'ma' (valuing negative space) with the Scandinavian emphasis on functionality and minimalism.

The result of this fusion is a design aesthetic emoting minimalist warmth, clearly functional yet aesthetically pleasing.

Music

We’ve been enjoying the music of San Of The Rambutan.

Their fusion provides an exciting blend of soul and jazz with powerful melodies and narratives. We love how they begin to explore the classical rules of jazz with modern and experimental electronic sounds.

Art

Maya Irving’s artwork encapsulates a fusion between her internal and external worlds.

Where her current art expresses the relationship between creativity and sexuality. We love the merge of textures, bold colours and abstract forms that compose her pieces.

Thought

Fusion is a powerful catalyst for innovation and creativity, breathing new life into familiar forms and ideas. As we go about our lives this week;

What aspects of our own world can we blend together to create a new perspective or idea?

How can our personal, professional, and creative lives fuse together to form a unique symphony?
